🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In October 1954, three ground observers and a pilot of an F9F-5 aircraft sighted an object with a bright blue-white light trail. The phenomenon lasted about 15 seconds and moved in a straight line from north to south. Although initially thought to be a meteor, it was quickly dismissed due to the lack of sound and stable flight. The observation was clear and cloudless, and the trail was longer and of a different color than a typical jet afterburner.
Oceana Air Base recorded the incident with precision, including details like the trail's altitude (around 22-23 thousand feet) and the exact location of the sighting. Despite no photos or physical evidence, the report was detailed and reviewed by multiple military offices. Ultimately, it was concluded to be a meteor, though the trail description and lack of sound raised some doubts. The case was filed unresolved, but remains an interesting example of how sightings were documented at the time.
