Summary

In February 1955, a witness in New York observed a yellow, oval-shaped object that appeared three times at different times. Each time it appeared, it was brighter than the previous and moved erratically. The sightings lasted two to three minutes, with the object moving from south to north over Central Park. Although the witness didn't see anything unusual while taking photos, the object appeared on a negative. Investigators concluded it was likely a reflection of powerful lights off haze or low clouds, a common phenomenon in the area at the time. The explanation of searchlight reflections aligned with other similar sightings in the city, reinforcing the idea that it was not an unknown object but an optical effect.

The official investigation, conducted by the military, deemed further investigation unnecessary as there was no clear evidence of an unexplained phenomenon. The New York area was known for frequent use of powerful searchlights, making reflections off low cloud layers or haze a plausible explanation. Despite the apparent simplicity of the case, the report was archived under Project 10073, a program collecting UFO reports. The case was closed without further inquiry, but it remains an example of how lights and weather can create optical illusions that seem inexplicable at first glance.
