Summary

In February 1958, an observer in Topeka, Kansas, spotted a comet-like object falling with a tail four times its size. The object, emitting an orange flame and the size of a dime, quickly disintegrated. Despite the detailed description, authorities concluded there was insufficient information to determine its nature. Several possibilities were considered, such as a daylight meteor, an object lost from an aircraft, or even a burst weather balloon. The official report found no clear explanation but ruled out any threat.

The report includes testimonies from a military officer and a civilian who observed the phenomenon simultaneously. The civilian, while driving, saw the object for 15 seconds, while the officer observed it for only one or two seconds. Both agreed the object was falling straight down at high speed. Although it was suggested the object could be something lost from a high-altitude aircraft, no flight records were found in the area at that time. The final analysis concluded there was insufficient data for a precise evaluation.
