🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
A civilian observer in Cockburn Harbor, on the Caicos Islands in the Caribbean, reported an unusual aerial phenomenon on May 29, 1958. At around 4:20 AM, they saw a bright amber fireball with a tail extending vertically upwards. The entire horizon was illuminated by the event, which slowly descended vertically for about 10 to 15 seconds before disappearing behind the island. Investigators ruled out a meteor due to the nature of the observation, but could not confirm its origin. It was considered possibly a flare or signal from an aircraft, a naval unit, or a local ground installation, though these sources were not verified. The case was ultimately deemed "insufficient for evaluation."
The fireball did not clearly indicate an astronomical event, but neither could its source be identified with certainty. The observer's description, along with the duration and movement of the object, suggests a natural or artificial phenomenon, but no conclusive evidence was found. The final report concluded that there were not enough data for a definitive assessment, leaving open the possibility of an unusual atmospheric event or an undocumented experiment.
