In July 1992, Captain Vladimir Molokanov disappeared while returning in a Su-27 jet after a training mission. He lost contact with base operations in the Okhotsk region near the Shantarskiye Islands, and no trace of him or the plane has been found since. Authorities have considered multiple theories: accident, pilot unconsciousness, escape abroad, or even UFO abduction. Despite three months of search and analysis, none of these hypotheses have been confirmed. The only plausible explanation so far is a mechanical failure, as a malfunction in both engine regulators was reported. However, the pilot was advised to continue the flight, which does not explain his disappearance.
The investigation included military and diplomatic intelligence, and no evidence was found that the pilot had escaped to Japan, the United States, or South Korea. This is not the first time a pilot from this unit has disappeared under mysterious circumstances, adding an air of mystery to the case. Although the official theory remains an accident, the lack of concrete evidence has left room for speculation, including the possibility of an unexplained phenomenon.
