🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In January 1964, a Minuteman missile launch from Vandenberg AFB caused widespread concern across the United States. From Idaho to Mexico, over 130 calls were made to news media and civil authorities, puzzled by unusual sky phenomena. The launch occurred at twilight, creating colorful patterns that gave the illusion of an explosion. The confusion led to numerous reports and questions, even raising the possibility of an unidentified object.
The official explanation clarified that it was a routine training launch by the Strategic Air Command. The phenomenon was due to atmospheric physics: as the missile exited Earth's shadow into sunlight, exhaust gases expanded and reflected light in various colors. This effect was especially visible during twilight, when atmospheric density and the sun's position create unique conditions. To prevent future misunderstandings, air force authorities proposed adding information to their public affairs manuals.
