🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In July 1964, a civilian in Whitesboro, New York, reported seeing a bright object moving northward. The object, brighter than any visible star, paused at intervals and then accelerated suddenly before disappearing. The witness and others observed a similar pattern on the nights of the 26th and 27th. The detailed and repeated description suggested an unusual phenomenon, prompting official reports.
The U.S. Air Force concluded the objects were the satellites Echo I and Echo II. These satellites, designed to reflect radio signals, were also visible to the naked eye when passing overhead. Their seemingly erratic movement was due to the observer's perspective from the ground and their orbital path. Despite the official explanation, the civilian's testimony and the repeated nature of the phenomenon generated local interest. The case became a classic example of how satellites can be misinterpreted as unidentified objects.
