Summary

In January 1965, a Qantas pilot and crew reported observing seven vapor trails over the Tasman Sea between New Zealand and Australia. The Electra aircraft was at 20,000 feet when the trails appeared at around 35,000 feet, moving west to east. According to the report, the trails split into seven distinct directions, suggesting a formation of aircraft. The crew estimated the objects were traveling at speeds higher than normal and that the trails dissipated from the rear. Despite the lack of an official explanation from Australian air authorities, some officers suggested it could have been a formation of high-speed military aircraft.

The case generated controversy as no radar activity was recorded in the area and no authorized flights were confirmed. Although a natural explanation, such as ice crystals, was proposed, some high-ranking RAAF officers considered the evidence pointed to a military formation. The report was classified and later declassified, allowing today's analysis of one of the many UFO mysteries. The lack of photographs or physical evidence doesn't help solve the mystery, but the crew's testimony and the absence of conventional explanations make it an intriguing case.
