Summary

In August 1965, lights that appeared to be UFOs were reported in Richmond and Walnut Creek, California. Mr. Gates, manager of the Morrison Planetarium, investigated the phenomenon. At the time, an intense electrical storm and a full moon created unique conditions. Storm clouds were moving rapidly at low altitude, while high thunderheads remained stationary. Moonlight reflected off the tops of the thunderheads created an optical illusion that made the lights appear to dance.

The official explanation attributed the phenomenon to moonlight reflection in the clouds. Although photos were taken and physical evidence collected, no evidence of unidentified objects was found. The report concluded it was a natural atmospheric phenomenon, not a UFO sighting. This case is a classic example of how extreme weather conditions can create optical illusions mistaken for unexplained phenomena.
