Summary

In March 1967, an observer in Mescalero, New Mexico reported the sighting of between 30 and 40 bright, small silver specks. These objects, which occasionally blinked and moved, were observed for over 45 minutes. Two radars at Holloman Air Force Base, the M-33 and the SPS-8, captured intermittent signals of the objects, but could not maintain a stable track. Eventually, it was determined that the radar signal was caused by internal system noise, not a real object. Despite this, the visual and radar data coincided in certain aspects, generating some controversy. Investigators concluded it could have been an accidental chaff drop, a substance used to confuse radars, although no one admitted to it.

The report includes testimonies from experienced radar operators and a detailed description of the weather and technical conditions at the time. Although the existence of an unidentified object could not be confirmed, the case remains an interesting example of how radars can generate false positives. The lack of a clear explanation and the coincidence between visual and radar data have kept the debate alive about what really happened that day in Mescalero.
