In May 1956, Hungary witnessed multiple sightings of unidentified flying objects. According to a declassified document, several reliable engineers reported that the Ministry of Defense had been alerted about a formation of objects flying eastward. These objects, observed at high speed and at an altitude of around 25,000 meters, were detected by radar units of the Air Defense Command, but no action was taken due to the lack of available weapons. For weeks, daily reports described these objects, which could change direction, accelerate, and decelerate unexpectedly.
Hungarian engineers and scientists discussed these phenomena in technical institutes, concluding they did not exist and that the reports might be the result of U.S. propaganda campaigns. An official report even labeled them as a myth. Despite this, one of the most notable comments was: "I hope they are heading to Budapest." This remark suggests that, although the phenomenon was downplayed, there were still voices that found it intriguing.
